Frank Griffith's nonet has an interesting guest in the piano chair tonight at the Vortex and at the Pizza Express Dean Street on Saturday, French pianist Franck Amsallem.
Amsallem was born in Oran in Algeria and moved withhis family to France as a youngster. At seventeen, Modern Jazz Quartet pianist John Lewis chose him to feature his playing in a documentary. He went to the US and lived there; sideman creditsincluded Gerry Mulligan, Charles Lloyd, Bobby Watson, Jerry Bergonzi, Rick Margitza, Maria Schneider, Blood Sweat and Tears, and Harry Belafonte.

Frank Griffith tells us he's just had the first copies in of his new big band CD Holland Park Non Stop (Hepjazz) and will be selling them at these gigs.
