Tonight at City Hall is the launch of a new charity the Mayors Fund for Young Musicians. The charity aims to raise £2m by March 2012 to support music bursaries in London. Four hundred children aged 7-11 will be selected by the 33 London boroughs for four-year bursaries. The children will be selected on the basis of "commitment, talent and financial need.
From the jazz world, Julian Joseph is a Patron and his brother James is a Trustee.
Founder Patron is Boris Johnson. His advisor on Arts and Culture, Munira Mirza says:
'We know that music education can have a hugely positive impact on a child’s life but sadly there are many families who simply cannot afford it. The Fund is an ambitious initiative that will transform access to music education in London and with it, help improve the lives of many disadvantaged young people.'
