THE SWAN INN, HAMPTON WICK FIRST ANNIVERSARY
In May 2009 LondonJazz had a feature entitled "At the going down of the sun....." . Our weekly jazz jam had lost its venue at The Rising Sun in East Twickenham and was taking a long break.
I'm happy to say that we have been successfully up and running again every Tuesday evening at The Swan in Hampton Wick (sbove) and are about to celebrate our first anniversary there on Tuesday 12th July.
Our talented house band is formed by Nick Cooper on keys, Mo Nazam on guitar, Jeremy Holroyd on drums and Martin Young on bass. Singers, instrumentalists and punters regularly crowd into the friendly pub to enjoy a variety of instrumental and vocal jazz from Herbie Hancock and Wane Shorter to Cole Porter, Gershwin and Rogers & Hart. As well as attracting the local community, singers and instrumentalists come in from various parts of London and Surrey to perform and enjoy the music and the friendly ambiance. Duncan Lamont, sax player and composer, regularly calls in and plays with the house band and guitarist Nigel Price made a recent unexpected appearance. One local resident commented: "This is like having the Bull's Head in Hampton Wick!" Do join us on 12th July for the first anniversary celebration from 8.30 to 11 pm.

THE HARE AND HOUNDS, EAST SHEEN
Two other excellent new jazz jams in the Richmond/Kingston area are bass player Shura Greenberg's Sunday afternoon sessions at The Hare and Hounds in East Sheen on the first Sunday of each month. Shura's excellent quartet plays from 2 to 6.30 and welcomes guest instrumentalists and vocalists. The pub has a large garden where the music takes place on sunny days, and has a very good lunch menu. As well as his very successful monthly jam session/open mic which attracts players such as Stan Robinson and Duncan Lamont, Shura has other Sunday sessions with featured vocalists such as Brigitte Beraha, Sofia Wilde, Helen Burnett, Marcella Puppini and Kathleen Willison.

THE CHARLIE BUTLER IN MORTLAKEFurther down the road in Mortlake, drummer Peter Robinson runs another very successful jam session/open mic every Monday evening from 8 o'clock at The Charlie Butler. This started out last October after a few monthly tryouts, and has grown from strengh to strength. The PJR Trio has Peter Robinson on drums, Jonathan Smith on keys and Robin Beynon on double bass. They are joined by numerous talented horn players including Duncan Lamont and Stan Robinson and a growing number of vocalists, many of whom originally met at Richmond Jazz School, and enjoy singing with the helpful and encouraging trio. This is another friendly evening and Peter and the pub manager make everyone feel very welcome.
